Lesson Summary: What do you use fingerspelling for?
Fingerspelling is used for:
- Proper nouns (names, titles)
- Words borrowed from English that do not have an ASL sign
- Specifying foods, colors, or items within a larger category (Like sub-items)
Examples:
- Sign FISH, then spell salmon, trout, sole, etc.
- Sign MEAT, then spell beef, filet mignon, sirloin
- Sign PURPLE, then spell Magenta or Lavender
There are many kinds of milk these days. Can you think of other sub-items for MILK?
You would use the sign MILK, then fingerspell:
- OAT, ALMOND, CASHEW etc...
